I am sick of hearing about the Florida court battle involving the Muslim woman who refuses to remove her veil for a driver's license photo, yet wants to keep her license. She says that her religion forbids her face from being photographed. Fine -- I have no problem at all with someone deciding that they can't have their face photographed. But that choice, like many choices, may carry consequences. In this case, the consequence is that you don't get to have a driver's license.
An ACLU attorney is quoted saying, "This is about religious liberty. It's about whether this country is going to have religious diversity." I couldn't disagree more. Separation of church and state goes both ways -- the state can't force you to have your picture taken with your face uncovered, but nor can the church force the state to grant a license to someone who would otherwise be denied one just because of a religious belief.
This whole thing seems even sillier when you realize, as the CNN.com, article notes, that out of nine Muslim nations listed, all but one require women to uncover their faces for ID pictures. The one nation? Saudi Arabia. Why? Because women can't drive there at all, so they clearly don't need ID cards. Well, that would be another rant...
If she does not like her freedom of using a bus for transportation, then go back home, on an airplane. I'll pay her way!
Posted by: Mr. No Name on May 14, 2004 05:22 PMOk seriously, worry about your own problems and get a life. I dont know how i ended up here but I had to stop by and say you're a redneck. Respect other cultures. You obiously have a negative view towards muslims. If anything you should be flattered if most muslim countries don't accept scarves in driver's licences but America is considering it.
Unfortunately there are people like you everyday who just give dirty looks to muslims and probably other cultures and thinking youre not racist.
If this post doesnt get posted then it shows how you have no balls. Mr. noname gets posted and if this doesnt, then it shows how biased you are.
Posted by: Alias on October 4, 2004 08:13 PMNo, I let just about any idiot post on here. Both you and Mr. No Name.
Posted by: Mike on October 4, 2004 11:26 PMWelcome to Amercica! If we decided to allow for every Tom, Dirk, and Mohammad to not abide by the laws and rules of said issue, then what is the point of having and laws and rules at all.
Mike. I don't think what you stated was racial at all.
Alias. Shut up! Respect the American Culture also. If the law states - for obvious reasons - that one's face should be uncovered for a license photograph, then shouldn't it be so?
Posted by: James Bowers on October 22, 2004 03:25 PMIt is our Constitutional Right to travel upon the public highways and to transport our property thereon, either by carriage or by automobile, it is NOT a mere privilege which a city may prohibit or permit at will, but a common right which we have under the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone is bound by this supreme Law of the Land.
If we are forced, coerced or unknowing placed under the states powers, the courts have said it is a clear violation of our rights. How many Americans have given up there rights by signing a contract for a drivers license without knowing they were giving up there rights?
I think it's a crock of shit to manipulate people this way.
Posted by: Carrie on February 2, 2005 11:27 AMI totally agree with what Mike said! This is America, and we have many freedoms, so if anyone who decides to make America their home then there are laws that we all have to abide by! If you don't like it...you have the freedom to leave! Simple as that! I think this whole multiculturalism idea is a crock! We have lost so much of our own American culture that is scares me! Our schools don't have Christmas Break anymore, but winter break, We have to remove the 10 commandments because it offends people who don't believe in God! Well I'm not sorry if it offends you, that is the foundation of our country! If you don't like our laws and cultures go start a country of your own!!
